the history behind FSS
Doug and Robin Barnett of El Dorado Hills,CA remember attending a charitable event benefiting foster youth. As they listened in the audience, they were struck by the statistics and wondered, "How does the public not know about the dismal outcomes of most foster youth?", "Out of all their many needs, what can most effectively help current and former foster youth succeed?", and "What can we and our community do about it?"
From that point onward, Doug and Robin told everyone who would listen about the struggles of current and former foster youth. In 2008, they founded Fostering Success & Significance, a California 501(c)(3) that works to support and empower foster youth attending college. FSS successfully connected with the Guardian Scholars Programs of UC Davis and CSU Sacramento and began to mentor, with the help of community mentors called Advocates, dozens of students per year.
Countless lunch and coffee meetings, dinners and birthday parties later, FSS continues to support former foster individuals attending college by removing financial and social barriers to success and facilitating opportunities for education, work and leadership. With the help of FSS's mentoring and aid, our students have "graduated" from our programs and have obtained university degrees and worked in variety of professional fields.
